A practical watering schedule for indoor plants

A fixed weekly watering day is the most common reason houseplants struggle. The right interval depends on the soil, the pot, the species, and the season — all of which shift through the German year. The approach below replaces the calendar with a few quick checks.

Check the soil before you reach for water

Heated rooms dry the top layer of soil quickly, which can make a pot feel ready for water when the roots below are still damp. A simple finger test avoids guessing.

  1. Feel the soilPush a finger 2–3 cm into the soil. If it is still moist at that depth, wait.
  2. Lift the potA dry pot is noticeably lighter. Learning the weight difference is one of the fastest ways to judge moisture.
  3. Water thoroughlyWhen the soil is dry, water until it drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer so roots do not sit in standing water.

Adjust for the season

Most houseplants grow actively in spring and summer and slow down in the darker months. As growth slows, water use drops, so the interval between waterings naturally lengthens.

Heated-home note: German winters combine low light with dry, heated indoor air. The dry air can mislead you into watering more, but lower light means slower growth and lower water use. Trust the soil check over the surface.

Match the interval to pot and species

  • Small pots dry out faster than large ones and need checking more often.
  • Terracotta breathes and dries quicker than glazed or plastic pots.
  • Water-storing species like snake plant and ZZ plant prefer to dry out almost completely between waterings.
  • Thinner-leaved species such as peace lily and spider plant prefer more even moisture.

Signs you are off balance

Yellowing lower leaves and consistently wet soil usually point to too much water. Crisp brown leaf edges and soil pulling away from the pot edge point the other way. Adjust gradually rather than swinging between extremes.
